The Sum of All Fears is the prequel to the other Tom Clancy stories such as The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger. This time Ben Affleck is the hero Jack Ryan. In this episode Ryan starts off his career by saving the world against a nuclear holocaust.

In Fears Jack Ryan gets caught up, for the first time, in high government affairs because of his background knowledge of President Nemerov (Ciaran Hinds) of Russia. The US Government, led by President Fowler (James Cromwell), seems to think that Nemerov is a bad guy, but Ryan believes otherwise. Ryan, together with his mentor, Bill Cabot (Morgan Freeman) and undercover agent John Clark (Liev Shreiber), discovers that some Russian scientists have run away and are building bombs of their own. Some time later, Baltimore gets nuked (which is cool, but could have been cooler) and Ryan figures out where it came from before the US and Russia begin an all out nuclear war.

Fears is fun for its secret high level government activity, mystery solving and even some explosions and special effects. The picture is always nice and Affleck comes off well as the slick character he’s supposed to be. Beyond the occasional action and suspense, however, Fears offers nothing to really get excited about.
