Stuck on You has a funny premise that really is pretty
funny at times, but is drawn out too long and too thin. The idea
behind it all is that Bob (Matt Damon) and Walt (Greg Kinnear)
were joined at the waist at birth and have been connected their
whole life. The nine inch attachment is small enough that they
both have full use of both of their arms and legs and big enough
that they share a liver and a separation would be dangerous to
Walt.
So Bob and Walt go about life in their small Massachusetts town,
happily running a hamburger joint until Walt decides he wants
to be an actor. Not the both of them – just him. We get
some good scenes of Walt doing a “one man show” with
Bob just acting lifeless as he goes along with it. But Walt wants
more and decides he needs to move to California to find it.
In Hollywood they run into Cher, playing herself, who wants out
of her contract and so hires Walt to play the lead male role,
hoping it will drive the show into the ground. It has just the
opposite effect and Walt becomes a celebrity. Meanwhile, Bob is
struggling to gain the affection of a pen pal girlfriend, with
whom he’s been in love with for some time.
Their newfound interests begin to drive them apart, which is
difficult considering they’re joined at the hip. In a mildly
sweet but mostly unaffecting manner, they eventually realize they’re
more important to each other than they had realized.
Aside from Cher, Stuck on You has a handful of celebrity
cameos including Jay Leno, Luke Wilson, Frankie Muniz, and Meryl
Streep in a very un-Meryl-Streep-esque role.
Though Stuck on You does have a good number of hard
laughs, way too much of the screen time isn’t funny at all.
Neither Damon nor Kinnear are particularly funny and it’s
only their situations that bring out real humor. Unnecessarily
long both in terms of humor and in narrative, cutting off a full
half hour would have done wonders for this film.
As it stands, Stuck on You is a one joke movie that
fails to live up to the comedic standards generally attributable
to the Farrelly brothers.
