After sitting through Final Fantasy, it suddenly isn’t
surprising why this film has become one of the biggest financial
bombs in America. The story is about as interesting as the non-playable
animation parts of a video game the likes of, oh say, something
like Final Fantasy. But darn it if it’s not still freaking
awesome animation.
The 3D animation is unprecedented. It almost makes Simone a believable
future. The humans really are just short of human. The detail
given to facial characteristics is like nothing else and all the
realistic scenery is just as fun. It’s simply an amazing
watch from beginning to end.
Unfortunately, the visual end is where the amazement ends. In
fact, not just the amazement but all the interest as well. In
Final Fantasy we get Aki Ross (voice of Ming-Na), a young scientist
infected with some kind of destructive spirit. Aki needs to find
some other spirits to heal her and has only the help of her mentor,
Dr. Sid (Donald Sutherland), and romantic interest Gray Edwards
(Alec Baldwin). Aki discovers that these spirits are coming from
the earth spirit and needs to reverse the process that is letting
out these spirits. Bad guy, General Hein (James Woods), wants
to just nuke ‘em, but Aki fears that this will destroy the
earth spirit. I hope it's not spoiling it to say she saves the
earth and her boyfriend.
Basically, the dialogue is bad, the characters are weak and the
whole dramatic effect is just lame. If we can ever create an affecting
story with animation like we have here, it could create an earthquake
in the film industry. What we have here however, is not much more
than a tremor.
