It seems strangely appropriate that a movie about a washed up former child actor played by a washed up former SNL actor should suck. The very movie embodies the primary reason why this character doesn’t have a job.

In a move that appears to be aimed at the pre-teen audience, Dickie Roberts (David Spade) spends the majority of the film acting like a little kid. Wanting to get back into show business after years of being unknown, he manages to get an audience with Rob Reiner. Reiner tells him he fits the physical description of the character needed for his new movie but doesn’t think he could understand the character because he hasn’t had a normal childhood.

Thus, wanting to obtain a normal childhood experience, he boards with a family for one month and acts like a little kid the whole time. From here we get a movie made up primarily of David Spade spazzing out. Stupid sight gags abound, including Dickie crashing multiple times while trying to learn how to ride a bike, running onto the slip and slide without water, etc. At times, it almost seems as if Spade is trying to revive the character he voiced in The Emperor’s New Groove, only this time he’s not funny.

After some time with the family, Dickie obtains the affection of the children and the mother, Grace (Mary McCormick). Not a single one of these characters is written realistically, so it’s difficult to say much about the acting. Stupid lines within a stupid story, the only joke here is the movie itself.
